How can a discectomy address a herniated disc? Laser Spine Institute provides insights into this procedure

If you have a herniated disc, a discectomy from Laser Spine Institute might be just the thing you need to reclaim your life from chronic neck or back pain. This state-of-the-art procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis and offers many advantages over traditional open spine surgery. So what exactly does this treatment entail?

What is a discectomy?

A discectomy is a procedure performed by the physicians at Laser Spine Institute to address the symptoms associated with the presence of a herniated disc in either the cervical spine (neck) or lumbar spine (back). When a disc ruptures, inner disc material is able to seep into the spinal canal, which can lead to the irritation of the spinal cord or a nerve root. It is this phenomenon that most often causes symptoms. The goal of a discectomy is simple: remove the source of the nerve irritation. In order to alleviate the patient’s pain, the highly trained surgeons at Laser Spine Institute:

  • Use guided fluoroscopy to identify the cause and exact location of the nerve compression
  • Create a very small incision, which is used to insert direct visualization and magnification tools and surgical tools into the affected region of the spine
  • Carefully remove the portion of the herniated disc to relieve compression on the nerve

The advantage to this approach is that it minimizes damage to the muscles and tendons that support the neck or back and is used to make very small adjustments that help limit the patient’s recovery time. In fact, the procedures we offer at Laser Spine Institute are offered on an outpatient basis and require less rehabilitation^ than many other spine surgeries.
